Role of Yogasanas in Lifestyle-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (Katigat Vata)

Lifestyle disorders develop due to rapid economic development and increased westernization of lifestyle. These diseases are primarily based on daily habits, including poor diet, physical inactivity, and incorrect body postures. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified India as one of the nations projected to have the highest number of lifestyle disorders in the future.

Musculoskeletal disorders encompass any injury, damage, or disorder of the joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. People's predisposition to these diseases is influenced by their lifestyle and occupational habits. For example, software engineers, due to their sedentary work and incorrect sitting postures, are prone to lumbar spondylosis. Similarly, farmers and housemaids who work in continuous forward bending positions, lift heavy objects, or engage in prolonged sitting, standing, and walking may develop Katigat Vata (lumbar spondylosis).

Individuals who drive for a living are also susceptible to Katigat Vata due to faulty driving postures and the bad condition of roads, which can cause continuous jerks damaging the vertebra over time. Yogasanas provide a gentle to intense workout that enhances strength, flexibility, and balance. Combined with conventional therapies, specific Yogasanas can help treat and cure these musculoskeletal disorders. Katigat Vata (lumbar spondylosis) represents a significant health problem, being one of the most important causes of disability among people. This negative impact on workability justifies choosing this subject to study.

Aims and Objectives

The aims of this study are as follows:

  1. To evaluate the role of Yogasanas in lifestyle-related Katigat Vata.
  2. To prevent these disorders with the help of Yogasanas.
  3. To promote Yogasana practice as a way of maintaining a healthy life.

Material and Methods

For this study, 30 patients suffering from Katigat Vata were selected from the Kayachikitsa OPD & IPD, Government Ayurved Hospital, Nagpur. They were divided into two equal groups: Group A and Group B. Group A performed Bhujangasana, Shalabhasana, Makarasana, and Shavasana, which are useful for Katigat Vata, along with their medication under supervision in the Swasthyarakshan OPD. Group B patients only received medication for Katigat Vata.

Selection Criteria

  1. Patients suffering from Katigat Vata.
  2. Age group 25-50 years.
  3. Irrespective of sex, religion, etc.

Rejection Criteria

  1. Patients with complications like vertebral fracture, disk prolapse, and spinal injury.
  2. Patients with major illnesses.

All the selected patients were examined according to their symptoms and graded as 0, 1, 2, or 3 on the first and last day of the study, which lasted for thirty days.

Katigat Vata Symptoms Gradation

- 0: Pain absent

- 1: Pain during standing, walking, and sitting

- 2: Difficulty in standing, walking, and sitting

- 3: Severe pain at rest

Yogasanas Advised

  1. Bhujangasana - For 3 minutes, 5 times
  2. Shalabhasana - For 3 minutes, 5 times
  3. Utthita Makarasana - For 3 minutes, 3 times
  4. Shavasana - For 5 minutes

Patients were advised to perform asanas on an empty stomach in the morning. They were also advised to avoid forward bending, lifting heavy objects, and using a hard bed for sleep.


It was found that patients in Group A experienced 70.27% relief in their symptoms, while patients in Group B experienced 48.64% relief in their symptoms.


Yogasanas are a complementary therapy used alongside conventional therapies to treat and prevent health problems. In today's fast-paced life, the tendency to work harder and faster to earn money leads to various musculoskeletal disorders. Katigat Vata is a major problem arising due to occupational and lifestyle factors.

This study demonstrates that Yogasanas are very helpful in preventing disorders like Katigat Vata. Asanas provide strength, flexibility, and balance to the muscles. Including Yogasanas in daily life can prevent Katigat Vata and lead to a healthy life.

Other measures, such as using an ergonomic chair designed to support proper sitting posture, can also help minimize uneven pressure on joints and muscles. To decrease ailments caused by occupational postures, one should avoid long sitting hours and take frequent breaks for stretching or physical movement.
